N.H.S.B.A is a Non-Profit Corporation headed up by the youth of the Nordonia Hills City School District , with support of the parents in these Communities. N.H.S.B.A was formed to help fund, plan, design, and construct a Skateboarding, BMX and Rollerblading facility in the city of Northfield Village, Ohio . The park is for the use by those in the Nordonia Hills City School District Communities and other surrounding communities. N.H.S.B.A was born from the idea of building a skate park, although the actual place for this facility was not in existence at that time.
In the summer of 2003 Brandon Kozak, then a 15 year old sophomore at Nordonia High School taught along with some of his friends a Skateboarding school in Northfield Plaza . "I have been skateboarding for over 6 years and am dedicated to Skateboarding both as a hobby and a sport. It is what I do when other people are playing other after school sports. I have skateboard all across Ohio , but mostly the parks located in the surrounding communities such as Hudson , Solon, Cuyahoga Falls , and Big Happy. I have personally felt for a long time that by holding a skate school it would help keep the NHCSD (Nordonia Hills City School District) communities a safer place for the youth by giving them a place to skateboard and not skating through the streets.”.
Mr. Kozak had taught a Skateboarding clinic a few years prier at the former Ohio Bikes and Boards location off of Rt. 82 and 271 junction in Macedonia, "This was the hit of the year" Mr. Kozak recalled saying to local newspapers, "People from 30 min. away drove out to Macedonia to watch their kids learn how to ride a skateboard”. It was an amazing thing, but later that year the landlord of Ohio Bikes and Boards decided to shut down the skate school due to liability issues, although the parents and kids had to sign a waiver it did not work out. Mean while Ohio Bikes and Boards moved to Northfield Village Plaza off of rt.8, so this last summer Mr. Kozak and friends made arrangements with Northfield Plaza Management to hold the new skate school there.
"I gave free skateboarding lessons to the youth again to keep them off of the streets and out of trouble, but also give them a place to go twice a week, which turned out to be a big hit. We had people coming from all over for a two hour session in Northfield Plaza off of rt. 8 in Northfield Village, but soon with the traffic coming into the plaza there was not enough space and we just needed a place to go" stated Mr. Kozak
Ounce again it was a hit but with all great ideas there are still downfalls. Due to the traffic within the plaza, and the lack of boundaries the idea soon had to be stopped ounce again. Mr. Kozak discussed the proposal of a skate park to his friends and they all agreed it would be a good idea. Later, in October 2004, Mr. Kozak and friends presented the idea to Northfield Village Mayor Victor Milani and council, it was approved that night. They had received the parasol for a lot of pre-paved brand new black top behind Northfield Plaza , in a place called Hunington Park . This land was pre-paved black top that has been fenced in. It was originally built for roller hockey but had not been used. The new Skate Park had come to be a total of 10,000 sq. ft. a more than large enough space to construct a skate park in. Soon after the newspaper came out local kids at Nordonia High School wanted to get involved and within the next 2 months Mr. Kozak and friends had presented the idea to Macedonia Mayor Don Kuchta and council about this skate park.
"I decided that this park should not only be for Northfield residents but it should at least include the Nordonia Hills City School District communities of Macedonia , Northfield Village , Northfield Center , and Sagamore Hills. Because everyone at my High School wants to be involved they should be able to have the privilege of skating there too" says Mr. Kozak
Macedonia Council and Macedonia Parks & Recreations approved the idea and were more than willing to help out with a project of this matter. In the mean time Mr. Kozak raised enough money and even donated some from his other company Galbadian Networks, LLC a web hosting and design company, to file the Non-Profit papers.
"I figured if I created a Non-Profit organization people would be more willing to help out with my efforts rather than going door to door collecting money". Stated Mr. Kozak
Next, He set off to visit Sagamore Hills Board of Trustees who were also willing to help out with the project.
"If I get the Mayor's and council's involved in the project and have their support, it will greatly affect the outcome of this project. It will also show that this project is real and not some dream that may not happen. It is important to get the communities and the local businesses involved and that is what happens when you have the city there to support you".
Now all there is left to do is raise the money. Leaving Mr. Kozak in a stump he decided to look for grants and get in contact with some people who might be of some help.
"I am in contact with Sate Senator Kevin Coughlin and I am applying for as many grants as I can find, Such as the Tony Hawk Foundation who can donate up to $10,000 to projects such as this. There are so many grants and donations out there you just have to take the time to find them".
As of now the NHSBA is in Donation mode trying to get any and all donations possible to fund this operation. Help out your local community or help Mr. Kozak give his fellow peers their #1 dream a Skateboarding, BMX, and Rollerblading park. |
